Language Fluency

Language Fluency

Let me tell you about a day in the life of an English teacher who gets invited by students to hang out. Picture this: I'm in China, far from family, feeling a bit lonely sometimes, but that's not what we're focusing on today.

I was reminded of a dear experience I had a few years ago when a good friendship developed at English Corner activities, turn out to be such a win-win outcome for me and the student involved. I suppose we enjoy each others company while learning at the same time. I got to go to places I would not go without a chaperone and she got to share China with me while practicing her English. We remain friends today, but we don’t talk that much anymore, life gets busy and we don’t live in the same city anymore.

I did remember that experience above because today I had a similar beginning of what it could be the same kind experience I had with my friend before. This last week I had made a few new friends at the canteen and they invite me to spend Saturday together going out of the university to eat and visit some places with her and her friends.

I accepted the invitation and we had a nice “Huo Guo” for lunch, we walked at the park and we went to a few places where it we could not get in because it was full of people (no more bookings available) like the KTV for karaoke singing. But we manage to do other fun stuff, like riding the swing on the park.

Now here is the point I want to emphasize, when I met those girls, specially Lou Yike (the one I spend more time talking) she was not so confident to talk, what I mean by that is that she was not very confident in her abilities to express herself, and to be honest she needed to look in her phone to find words she wanted to say, I will not lie to you and say that by end of the day she did not needed to keep searching for words, but I will say, that after a few hours together she forgot about being nervous and we as a group was just enjoying going out, and when that happen her fluency got so much better, by the end of the day it was palpable how much she did improve in just one day of practice. AND THAT IS WHAT I TELL ALL MY STUDENTS ALL THE TIME, AND THEY SEEMS NOT TO BELIEVE IT, BECAUSE THEY DON’T PRACTICE ENOUGH.

As my other friend from few years ago got so much better in speaking English because of the practice, I feel the same could be accomplished with anyone who practices. The cool thing about it is that we are having so much fun together and it did not fell like studying (but it is studying). I am saying this because I know some students would feel guilty for NOT studying, but in the situation of learning a language only studying hard as in reading books and doing grammar exercise may not produce the best results if you do not include the use of the language in real life communication as did have today while having so much fun in doing it.

I am always hoping to make a difference in the lives of my students and friends I made here in China, and today reaffirmed the power of genuine connection and shared experiences. As I reflect on the day spent with Lou Yike and her friends, I'm reminded once again of the transformative potential inherent in human interaction.

Through our shared adventures, laughter, and conversations, I witnessed Lou Yike's confidence grow, her English fluency blossoming with each passing moment. What began as hesitant exchanges soon evolved into fluid communication, demonstrating that immersion and practice truly are the keys to language mastery.

Just as my previous friendship flourished through mutual exploration and learning, today's experience underscores the importance of stepping outside the confines of traditional study methods. Language acquisition isn't solely about memorizing vocabulary or conjugating verbs; it's about engaging with the language in real-world contexts, embracing the spontaneity of conversation, and forging meaningful connections along the way.

So, as I bid farewell to another fulfilling day in China, I carry with me not only cherished memories but also a renewed sense of purpose. Through our shared experiences, I am reminded that teaching isn't just about imparting knowledge—it's about empowering individuals to unlock their full potential and navigate the world with confidence.

As I continue on this journey, I am committed to fostering moments of connection, growth, and discovery, knowing that each interaction holds the promise of transformation—for both my students and myself. Together, we'll navigate the intricacies of language, culture, and friendship, weaving a tapestry of experiences that enrich our lives and transcend borders. And in these moments, I find my greatest fulfillment — knowing that I've made a difference, one conversation at a time.

No No & Yes

No No & Yes

No”, “No” and a “YES”

Sometimes you don’t get a “Yes” if you don’t keep asking. Besides getting something to eat, the other reason I go the canteen is to make new friends. I am alone in China and if I did not have managed a way to make friends I would be long gone from China, but fortunately I not only figure it out how to make good friends, but also find out that Chinese people are wonderful, once you made the first move and break the ice, they are very very friendly, generous, the invitations start to come in, and pretty son I have to say “no” sometimes simply because I cannot attend everything I was invited to participate. No wonder I am still in China after 6 years. I am not saying I will stay here forever, but when the time comes to renew the contract is always a easy decision – that is because here I have been felling very welcome, but remember, for the most part you have to be the one who take chances first in trying to make a friend.

Tattoos. is it a good idea ?

Tattoos. is it a good idea?

In recent years, tattoos have become increasingly popular as a form of self-expression and art. However, there are compelling reasons to reconsider the decision to permanently ink one's skin. This article aims to make the case against tattoos, exploring various arguments that highlight potential drawbacks and urging individuals to think twice before undergoing this irreversible transformation.

1. Permanent Consequences:

The permanence of tattoos is arguably one of the most significant drawbacks. What may seem like a fantastic idea today might not be as appealing in the future. Our tastes, preferences, and perspectives evolve over time, and a tattoo that once held deep personal meaning may lose its significance. Unlike changing a hairstyle or wardrobe, tattoos are not easily reversible, making them a long-term commitment that many come to regret.

2. Seeking Attention at What Cost?

Tattoos often serve as attention-grabbing statements, but is it worth the potential consequences? While a well-designed tattoo can be a source of pride, extreme or attention-seeking tattoos might lead to unintended consequences. Constantly drawing attention to oneself may result in judgments, stereotypes, or even discomfort in certain social or professional settings. Before making such a bold statement, one should carefully consider the potential implications on personal and professional relationships.

3. Respecting Your Body as a Temple:

The analogy of the body as a temple suggests that we should treat our bodies with the utmost care, avoiding unnecessary alterations. Just as we prioritize a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding harmful substances, some argue that permanently marking the skin contradicts the idea of preserving the body in its natural state. Choosing to view the body as a canvas for art may diminish the importance of maintaining its integrity and health.

4. Unpredictable Reactions:

Tattoos involve introducing foreign substances into the body, and not everyone reacts the same way. Allergic reactions, infections, or other complications can arise, and these risks should not be taken lightly. What begins as an exciting artistic endeavor can quickly turn into a regrettable decision if the body reacts negatively to the tattooing process or the inks used.

5. Professional Implications:

In many professional settings, visible tattoos can be a significant barrier to employment. Certain industries uphold a more conservative image, and tattoos are often perceived as unprofessional or distracting. While societal attitudes towards tattoos have evolved, biases still persist, potentially limiting career opportunities for individuals with visible ink. Choosing to get a tattoo may inadvertently close doors to certain professional paths, hindering one's ability to secure employment in industries that prioritize a more traditional appearance.

6. Aesthetic Appeal and Self-Image:

Opinions on beauty are subjective, but personal preferences play a role in how tattoos are perceived. Some individuals find the natural, unadorned skin more aesthetically pleasing, associating it with a timeless and classic beauty. The decision to forego tattoos can be a personal choice driven by an appreciation for simplicity and a desire to maintain a clean, unaltered appearance. This perspective aligns with the belief that confidence and self-respect are reflected in how one presents themselves, and for some, a lack of tattoos is seen as an expression of this confidence and respect for one's body.

Conclusion:

In addition to the permanence of tattoos, potential professional consequences, and the analogy of the body as a temple, the impact on aesthetic appeal and self-image adds another layer to the case against tattoos. In a world where first impressions matter, visible tattoos can be a hindrance in professional settings, limiting career opportunities. Moreover, the personal belief that a lack of tattoos enhances a person's beauty and reflects confidence underscores the importance of careful consideration before making the irreversible decision to get inked. Ultimately, individuals should weigh the potential consequences and societal perceptions against the desire for self-expression through tattoos.

Are you insured? #English Learning #Success

Are you insured?

Unlocking Success: The English Advantage

In the grand tapestry of personal and professional growth, the role of language proficiency often takes center stage. One such language, English, stands as a beacon of opportunity, capable of transforming destinies and opening doors to a world of possibilities. In the pursuit of success, nothing is more pivotal than the realization of the profound importance of learning English.

Allow me to weave a tale that underscores this point, drawing inspiration from the unexpected world of insurance sales. Picture a seasoned salesman, a former soldier tasked with peddling war insurance to his comrades. While his peers struggled in the same endeavor, this particular salesman possessed an uncanny ability to outsell them all.

Intrigued by his success, a sergeant decided to shadow him during a day of sales to unravel the secrets behind his remarkable performance. The salesman's pitch was unconventional yet remarkably effective. Instead of dwelling on the monetary aspects of insurance policies, he redirected the conversation to a compelling question: In the event of war, who would the general send to the front lines first — a soldier with insurance or one without?

This shift in perspective proved to be a game-changer. Prospective clients, initially dismissive of insurance premiums, began to reconsider the true value of coverage. The realization that being uninsured might make them more expendable on the battlefield tipped the scales, prompting many to invest in the safety net provided by the insurance policy.

Now, let's transpose this narrative onto the realm of education, specifically the importance of learning English. For students, mastering this global language can be the key to unlocking a future filled with professional opportunities and financial success. Imagine, if you will, a parallel scenario where students approach their language studies with the same urgency as soldiers contemplating insurance on the battlefield.

As students traverse their college years, the proficiency in English they cultivate becomes an invaluable asset. It's not merely about securing a job; it's about securing a better paying job. In fact, one could posit that language skills might overshadow the significance of a university degree in the competitive job market.

Consider this: Those equipped with fluent English by the end of their college journey enjoy higher odds of landing coveted positions. It's not just about communication; it's about unlocking doors that lead to success. This argument, akin to the persuasive insurance pitch, seeks to impress upon students the urgency of acquiring English proficiency before their advantage dissipates.

In the grand narrative of life, where career trajectories hinge on the choices we make, the ability to articulate, persuade, and connect in English becomes a superpower. It's not just a language; it's a ticket to a world where opportunities abound. So, to the aspiring student, I say this: The journey of success begins with the realization that learning English isn't just a skill; it's a strategic advantage that can shape the trajectory of your future. Seize it with both hands, for in the language of success, fluency in English is the master key.

MATES, ROOMMATES, SCHOOLMATES, ETC.

Mates

MATES, ROOMMATES, SCHOOLMATES, ETC

In the journey of life, the significance of having good mates cannot be overstated. From the hallowed halls of university to the demanding realms of work, and even through the formidable challenges of school, having a solid support system can make all the difference. Let's explore how you can harness the power of good mates to enrich your experiences and navigate the various stages of life more smoothly.

1. Shared Learning in University:

University life is often a whirlwind of academic challenges, self-discovery, and personal growth. Having good mates during this period can create a dynamic environment for shared learning. Collaborating on assignments, engaging in stimulating discussions, and sharing study resources can enhance your understanding of the subjects and contribute to a more enriching educational experience.

2. Navigating the Challenges of School Together:

School can be a testing ground for both academic and social skills. Good mates can serve as a reliable support system during exams, projects, and extracurricular activities. They provide encouragement, share insights, and celebrate victories, making the school journey more enjoyable and less stressful.

3. Professional Growth in the Workplace:

Entering the workforce introduces a new set of challenges and opportunities. Having good mates at work can foster a positive and collaborative atmosphere. Through teamwork, you can tackle projects more efficiently, exchange ideas for problem-solving, and create a supportive environment that boosts everyone's professional growth.

4. Emotional Support in Every Stage:

Life is not only about academic and professional pursuits; it also involves navigating personal challenges. Good mates can be a pillar of emotional support during tough times, offering a listening ear, providing advice, and being a source of comfort. This emotional bond becomes crucial during transitions between school, university, and work, helping you navigate the uncertainties of life with more resilience.

5. Creating Lasting Memories:

The camaraderie with good mates often leads to the creation of lasting memories. Whether it's late-night study sessions, team projects, or shared accomplishments, these experiences forge bonds that can last a lifetime. Such memories not only add depth to your personal narrative but also contribute to a sense of belonging and shared history.

In conclusion, the power of having good mates extends far beyond the immediate benefits of academic collaboration or professional synergy. It encompasses shared growth, emotional support, and the creation of lasting memories. Cultivating and cherishing these relationships can significantly enhance your overall well-being and contribute to a more fulfilling journey through school, university, and the professional world. So, treasure your good mates—they are the invaluable companions on the road of life.

The sad things most students tell me is that they did not manage to keep making good friends while in university, in the case of a roommate is almost impossible not to became friends with since you are living in the same room, so why not increase the benefit of having more friends than just having a few ones (your roommates),is you agree with me perhaps you can read a few other of my posts and find out there is a good of go about doing exactly that.

It never gets Old.

It never gets Old.

The timeless magic of Christmas is upon us once more!

In just a matter of days, the joyous occasion of Christmas will be gracing us with its presence. However, it seems that amidst the hustle and bustle, many have lost sight of the true essence of this festive celebration. While some may associate it merely with family reunions and the exchange of gifts, the genuine reason for rejoicing often goes unnoticed.

The overpowering influence of commercialization has, in a sense, overshadowed the authentic meaning of Christmas. Despite the prevalence of gift-giving and family gatherings, it's essential to remember that the heart of the celebration lies in commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.

A few years back, I took to YuKu to share a video about the spirit of Christmas in 2018, and I revisited this endeavor in 2021. As we find ourselves on the brink of another Christmas, I feel compelled to share these videos once more.

Because the spirit of Christmas is timeless, I invite you to join me in revisiting these heartwarming moments. May this festive season be a reminder of the true reason for the celebration — the birth of Jesus Christ. Merry Christmas to one and all! 🎄✨
